I am new here and would love some input.

In mid-June 2010, we interviewed a photographer via Skype for our July 2011 wedding. She was wonderful and even mentioned that she keeps her deposit low ($300) because she would said she would never want a couple to keep her simply because the they had already put too much money down. (She said she had a bad photographer for her own wedding which is why she became a wedding photographer and would not want any couple to keep a photographer they weren't thrilled with.)

In mid-July, we sent her the filled out contract and the deposit and we discussed an engagement session that would happen in late-August. THEN, I was contacted by my dream photographer (she charges over $10,000 for a standard 8-hour package but she is fabulous and very well respected) because of something I posted on an online social networking site about how I adore her photography. This photographer and I emailed back and forth and she told me that she would find a way to drastically cut some costs for us (I guess she really liked me) so that we could have her as her photographer.

My fiance and I talked it over and decided that we would just go ahead and eat the $300 deposit and use the new "dream" photographer for our wedding. After we were sent a contract from the new photographer, I went to email the first photographer and saw that she had sent me the copied, filled-out contract via email and said that she looked forward to meeting us later that month. This was August 1st. I emailed her right away and told her the entire story - apologized, told her that we understood that she keep the deposit, etc. (So, this is 11 months from the wedding date.) She didn't respond and so three days later I emailed her again. We went ahead and signed the contract with the new photographer and put down a deposit for her. I emailed the old photographer again today (third time) and still no response.

I'm racking my brain as to why she hasn't responded. If she is mad, that's fine, but I need her to acknowledge the cancellation. Her contract doesn't really go into depth about canceling, although it does say that she can get money for any "damages"... but it also states that if the rest of the amount due ($3200) isn't paid by 2 weeks before the wedding, she doesn't do the wedding. Arg. So confused. What's even stranger is that she has an online calendar that has her "available" dates and "unavailable" dates and our wedding date still says "unavailable".

I'm hoping that other photographers will respond. How do I handle non-communication from her? What happens when a client cancels 11 months in advance? She's not a shady photographer - she's well known and respected. (And I know that she deposited the check we sent - it went through. And the email I used for her was correct as well.)

Thanks.
